By Leung Shue Yan, PR & Marketing Intern

As a university student eager to explore the world, my six-week internship at Image Line Communications in London was a transformative adventure.

Embracing the Unexpected

My very first day began with a memorable detour: I arrived triumphantly at Image Line’s former office! Having just landed in London 24 hours prior, I panicked until Sue’s calm guidance redirected me. We laughed about how I’d accidentally taken a “heritage tour” of the company’s history. This warmth defined my time here. When a cyberattack disrupted our systems days later, the team’s resourceful response, seamlessly adapting workflows, taught me resilience in action.

Discovering PR’s Hidden Depths

I dove into the world of exhibitions, PR, and digital marketing, and learned something valuable: every campaign requires some detective work! Finding hard-to-obtain contact details felt like a treasure hunt, and organising everything neatly was like completing a puzzle. Sue and Vy taught me excellent tools to conduct this research. I also got to observe how the shipping industry is progressing by reading and filing their press releases. I even had the chance to send a press release on SeaNews, which was a new experience for me. Writing blog posts and LinkedIn updates about key moments in maritime affairs showed me how telling the right stories helps clients gain visibility.

Cultural Bridges: Hong Kong vs. UK Workstyles

Navigating workplace cultures was both enjoyable and enlightening. In Hong Kong, hierarchies are often more pronounced, with formal communication channels. Here, the open dialogue at Image Line surprised me—Sue encouraged questions immediately, and we usually just talk face-to-face, simply by turning our chairs around (haha). This fluidity initially felt unfamiliar but soon revealed its magic: ideas flowed freely, laughter punctuated our focus, and I felt empowered to contribute from day one. It was a joyful lesson in how different approaches can foster equally vibrant teamwork.

A Team that makes all the difference

In this close-knit environment, Sue, Vy, and Tom created space for curiosity, answering questions patiently, offering proactive guidance (including a nearby tour from Vy!). Their trust in me to handle real client work built confidence I’ll carry forward.

Skills for the Journey Ahead

Beyond maritime logistics and media strategies, I’m leaving with sharper critical thinking, proactive problem-solving, and refined communication skills. Most importantly, I’ve gained clarity on the supportive, dynamic professional I aspire to become. Thank you, Team Image Line, for turning six weeks into a foundation for lifelong growth.
