The owner of the Port of Liverpool wants to see more of its local goods shipped to Mersey instead of southern ports. Although only 10% of containers shipped to the UK arrive through Liverpool, there are clear benefits for doing so. Companies who ship through Liverpool could save over 200 million road miles by 2020, which would reduce congestion and pollution on the roads.
The Port of Liverpool is more centrally located than the southern ports, meaning that goods going more North could save hundreds of pounds per container. The 140 companies who have already backed Liverpool prove that there are substantial benefits in arriving there instead of southern ports. Peel Ports Group’s commercial director, Patrick Walters, said, “The shipping lines that make the ultimate decision to call at Liverpool are seeing the potential benefits. But we need to keep the momentum going, which is why we’re calling for more North West businesses to join us in making the strongest possible case for the city.”
